Neill Etteridge

Neill is considered to be one of South Africa’s most influential drummers. He has shared stages and studios with a litany of top artists both in and out of South Africa, has featured on over a thousand studio recordings, and has a work profile that covers every corner and genre of the South African music industry. In great demand as a session player and regular band-member, Neill divides his time between London and Johannesburg, and the only break he gets from playing and teaching is on the flights between. What follows is a short summary of his so far illustrious career.

Neill was the house band drummer for the popular Idols TV series, seasons 1-6.

He was the drummer for SA’s most iconic band, Mango Groove.

He is currently a member of two of Johannesburg’s most highly rated groups, Blu Bam Boo and The JHB Jazz Quintet.

Neill has undertaken many international tours to, and has had notable engagements in: Germany, Italy, France, USA, Australia, New Zealand, Russia, Poland, Hungary & Czechoslovakia. In the process he has shared the stage with the likes of the Soweto String Quartet, the top SA/USA vocalist Joseph Clarke, The Johannesburg Male Voice Choir – and, of course, Mango Groove.

Neill had the rightly-bestowed privilege of being invited – together with three other South African musical luminaries – to perform at the Moscow Conservatory, and the Gdansk Jazz Festival, alongside the world famous John McLaughlin group. He also represented South Africa in a performance by Mango Groove at the historical handover of Hong Kong back to China.

He has had live dates, and recorded, with many of the country’s most prolific artists as well as numerous Orchestral, Corporate, TV and Radio commercial engagements.

At the same time as being a session and stage drummer of choice for a host of top seliing artists, Neill has a particular passion for teaching drumming. He founded, and is the director and principal of the DrumLab group of educational studios in South Africa. There several studios where the same standard of drumming skill, technique and knowledge is taught to students of all levels of ability.

Neill is an international endorser & clinician for Sonor Drums, Zildjian Cymbals, Remo Drumheads, Pro Mark Signature Drum Sticks & Roland V-Drums.
